About the Resort
Why Tomamu, and why now
Hoshino Resorts Tomamu sits at the foot of Mt. Tomamu (1,239 m) in central Hokkaido, roughly 90 minutes by direct train from New Chitose Airport (CTS) and just under two hours from Sapporo. Unlike Niseko on the western coast, Tomamu is far enough inland to escape the maritime cloud and rain — but it's still squarely in the path of the Sea of Japan storms that make Hokkaido one of the snowiest places on earth. The mountain receives an average of around 12 metres of snow each season, and the snow that falls here is famously light, dry and consistent — the original "Japow".
Our three apartments are inside The Tower at Tomamu, which means they're true ski-in/ski-out: walk out the door in your boots, click in, and you're on the snow. The base of the gondola, the ski school, the rental shop, the Ice Village, the onsen and Hotalu Street's restaurants are all reachable on foot in five minutes or less — there's no bus, no car, no shuttle to plan around. For families travelling with non-skiers, kids, or anyone who'd rather skip a 4am ski-bus, this is the kind of location that completely transforms a Japan trip.
The ski season at Tomamu typically runs late November through early April. Mid-January to late February is peak powder season — coldest temperatures, deepest base, most consistent snowfall. December and early January are when the Ice Village is in full swing, and March is excellent for warmer days, longer light, and families. Outside of winter, the resort is best known for the Unkai Terrace — the "sea of clouds" phenomenon visible from the gondola summit on still summer mornings — along with hiking, golf and the indoor wave pool.
We're a small Australian-owned operation. Booking direct with us means no third-party commission, no surprise fees, real-time availability, and an English-speaking owner who personally answers every email. If you're weighing up Tomamu against Niseko, Furano or Rusutsu, we're happy to talk through the trade-offs and help you decide whether Tomamu is the right fit for your trip.
